Como todas las ideas que levantan pasiones, el progresismo ha sidoconsiderado por algunos como la única opción política plausible, y por otros como el origen de todos los males. Ambas apreciacionesmaximalistas se basan en caricaturas primarias de un fenómeno que vamás allá de la esfera política. Como se intenta mostrar en este texto, el progresismo constituye esencialmente una mentalidad, no unaideología en el sentido canónico del término. A diferencia de lo quesugieren las caracterizaciones tópicas, esa mentalidad no es un merosinónimo de lo que hoy entendemos por "izquierda", sino algo mástransversal que va desde un cierto liberalismo político hasta elmarxismo. La única manera de comprender la naturaleza del progresismoes, por una parte, estudiar en profundidad la evolución histórica dela idea de progreso, y por otra, analizar los valores que se han idoasociando a esta.
