Vor 40 J ahren habe ich ein Werkchen, wie das V orwort es nennt, herausgegeben, welches einem praktischen Bedurfnis entsprungen war, das sich mir bei den Vorbereitungen von Kandidaten fur die arztliche Staats- sowie fiir die Physikatspriifung ergeben hatte. Aus dem Werkchen ist allmahlich ein stattlicher Band geworden, dessen Um fang schon der Grenze der Handlichkeit sich nahert und der schon lange die nicht mehr zutreffende ursprungliche Bezeichnung als Kom pendium abgelegt hat. Die U mfangvermehrung ruhrt zu einem nicht geringen Teil von der Beigabe von Abbildungen her, welche dank dem Entgegenkommen der Verlagsbuchhandlung in dieser neuen Auflage die Zahl von 532 erreicht haben. Abbildungen konnen niemals die Gegen stande ganz ersetzen, aber sie konnen doch wesentlich dazu beitragen, das Verstandnis der Gegenstande zu fordern und vor allem die Er innerung an fruher Gesehenes wach und frisch zu erhalten. Darauf aber kommt es an: man muss pathologisch-anatomische Gegenstande gesehen, mit Verstandnis gesehen haben, wenn man pathologisch-ana tomische Ausbildung haben will. Ich habe immer den Grundsatz ver teidigt, nihil est in mente quod non prius fuerit in sensu. A us Buchern kann man praktische pathologische Anatomie, pathologisch-anatomische Diagnostik nicht lernen, auch nicht mit Halfe von Abbildungen, aber man kann durch solche fruher Gesehenes im Geiste festhalten und man kann die erworbenen Erinnerungsbilder vor dem Verloschen be wahren.
