Schellings Philosophie der Freiheit lässt sich als Pan-Personalismus charakterisieren, insofern sie zwei scheinbar entgegengesetzte Perspektiven auf menschliche Freiheit in einer Theorie versöhnt: die Forderung nach Einheit des Denkens in einem philosophischen System und die Forderung nach individueller Eigenständigkeit des Menschen. Im Zentrum der Untersuchung steht die Frage nach den erkenntnistheoretischen Grundlagen des Pan-Personalismus. Der traditionell gegen Schelling erhobene Vorwurf des Anthropomorphismus lässt sich unter der hier entwickelten Perspektive entkräften. Die methodische Konzeption, die Schellings Freiheitslehre implizit zugrunde liegt, lässt sich als transzendentale Hermeneutik bestimmen und zusammenhängend beschreiben.
