"Open Secrets" identifies an ethos of affirmative reticence and recessive action in Mme de Lafayette's "La Princesse de Cleves" (1678), Jane Austen's "Mansfield Park" (1814), and poems by William Wordsworth, Emily Dickinson, and Thomas Hardy.
