This historical novel, based on facts, describes the exciting and dramatic events during the American War of Independence from 1775 to 1783.
The conflict that broke out between the thirteen colonies and the English colonial power hit hard the many settler families who hoped for a new existence in the German lowlands in the state of New York.
The still young and beautiful Bettina Goldberg, called Betty, who said "I do" to Guy van Forst from Deerfield on July 15, 1775, is looking forward to building a new life with him on his farm, on the Frontier, in the valley of the Mohawk.
Guy is a member of the militia under Captain Deemoth. Everything still seems new and disturbing to Betty. As she learns to come to terms with life on the frontier, the settlements in the German lowlands are attacked and burned down by the allies of the English, the Iroquois. Guy and Betty, like some others, manage to escape to one of the nearby forts, but lose their home and Betty her first child after escaping.
Five Oneida arrive at Fort Stanwix, from whom they learn that the "Great Council Fire" has been extinguished.
The League of the Haudenosaunee, the Iroquois, no longer existed. The Tuscarora and the Oneida are the only Iroquois who are on the side of the Americans. All the others, such as the Seneca, Cayuga or Onondaga, have opted for the British side, such as the Mohawk, Thayendanegea, known as Joseph Brant.
The attacks of Brant and the royalist "Tories" become a nightmare for all settlers. From then on, Guy and Betty begin a fight for survival against the marauding Iroquois and the troops of King George III at the side of the militia and their newly won friends and their families, each of whom knows her own captivating fate. In April 1779, the Continental Army under Colonel Goose van Schaik entered the fray to crush the Iroquois force.
