New Age culture is generally regarded as a modern manifestation of Western millenarianism - a concept built around the expectation of an imminent historical crisis followed by the inauguration of a golden age - which occupies a key place in the history of Western ideas. The New Age in the Modern West posits the notion that New Age culture inherited 19th-century Theosophy's status as the natural successor to millenarian thought in the region. Nicholas Campion traces New Age ideas back to ancient cosmology, paying particular attention to their astrological and astronomical features and the concepts of the Aquarian Age and the end of the Maya Calendar, and considers New Age culture through an examination of the main relevant theorists of the modern age: the French astronomer, Charles Dupuis, the occultist, Godfrey Higgins, the theosophist, H.P. Blavatsky, the psychologist, C.G. Jung, and the writer and artist, Jose Arguelles. The New Age in the Modern West is an important book for anyone interested in counter-cultures and revolutionary ideas in the history of modern Europe.
