Welche Rolle spielen dabei die Inszenierungen des Mütterlichen? Welche Bedeutungen kommen dem Muttermotiv innerhalb der imaginierten Weiblichkeiten zu?§Diesen zentralen Fragen geht die sich im Schnittfeld von Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft bewegende Untersuchung nach und beleuchtet damit das bisher wenig beachtete Motiv in Hermann Hesses Prosa. Vor dem Hintergrund der zeitgenössischen Weiblichkeitsdiskurse, die zur Etablierung einer Ästhetik der Ambivalenz in Literatur und Kunst um 1900 führen und teils ambigue, teils divergente Frauen- und Mutterbilder hervorbringen, werden ausgewählte Romane und Erzählungen Hesses aus den Jahren 1900 bis 1930 untersucht.§Die Ergebnisse der Einzelanalysen ergeben eine differenzierte Typologie der Darstellungen des Mütterlichen und machen deutlich, dass das Mütterliche nicht zwingend an die Weiblichkeit gekoppelt ist und zu den vielfältigsten Motiven in Hermann Hesses Werk gehört.
