Probablemente movido a escribirla, hacia 1313,en el cerco infructuoso que Enrique VII de Luxemburgo somete a laciudad de Florencia, Dante quiere contribuir a erradicar la anarquíaimperante de su época, en Italia y, concretamente, en su ciudadflorentina. Sue?a con un orden social que establezca la paz universal. El tono de la obra, netamente gibelino, muestra a un Dante que haevolucionado intelectualmente. En un orden cronológico, hay que situar el texto después del tratado "De vulggari eloquentia" y antes del"Paradiso", entre la segunda y tercera parte de "La divinacomedia".Dante se muestra aquí como un intelectual a caballo entre laescolástica y el florecimiento de un estilo nuevo. Hay en él toda unaserie de giros, expresiones, alegorías, imágenes y simbolismosclaramente medievales, pero detrás de todo ello aparece un estilonuevo de pensar, un conjunto de ideas que, contra corriente,contribuyeron a cambiar el modo de interpretar el mundo.
