La successió de records -ni cronológica ni temática- quebarregen el més banal i el més transcendent, alló particular amb allóaparentment universal s'acumula formant un retrat complex de lainfantesa de l'autor en els anys 1940 i 1950 a Oklahoma, així com laseva vida d'artista i homosexual en els anys 1960 i 1970 a Nova York.El mateix Brainard escriví: "Sento que és tan sobre tothom com sobremi mateix. I m'agrada. Vull dir, sento que sóc tothom. I és unsentiment agradable. No durará. Peró n'estic gaudint mentre puc". Laprimera edició, de 1970, en una petita editorial, s'esgotá rápidament, i les reimpressions i reedicions ampliades se succeïren amb un granéxit. Me'n recordo ha inspirat molts autors, entre els quals caldestacar Georges Perec, autor del llibre Je me souviens.
