Manel Ballester Boix (Barcelona, 1919) fou un dels científics més universals de Catalunya i Espanya. Educat a les aules de lÆInstitut Escola de Barcelona i doctorat en Ciències, va dedicar la seva vida a la investigació químico-orgànica. Després dÆampliar els seus coneixements científics a la Universitat de Harvard (1949-1951), Ballester Boix es va dedicar de ple a la investigació, al CSIC de Barcelona i a lÆOffice of Aerospace Research and development dels Estats Units, país on més tard tornà amb la seva família per viure a Dayton (Ohio), entre 1961 i 1962. La seva aportació principal a la ciència fou el desenvolupament de la química percloroorgànica, amb el descobriment dÆun potent agent de cloració el 1954. Més tard, el 1964 va descobrir els Radicals Lliures Inerts, una classe de compostos de carboni trivalent dÆestabilitat excepcional que va obrir la porta a una nova era en la química orgànica. El 1982 fou guardonat amb el Premi Príncep dÆAstúries i va estar nominat al Premi Nobel de Química en onze ocasions.
