Neon South

Neon South  is an off-the-beaten-path Latin American travel narrative that unfolds like a novel, shadowing locals all too aware of how outside influences, from colonialism to globalism, have changed their lives. From the drug cartel-controlled squares of Mexico to Venezuelan jungles where the outside world threatens traditions, Marko Pogačar absorbs all he encounters with the eyes and words of a poet, finding humor in the absurd and intimacy in despair. MARKO POGAČAR was born in 1984 in Split, Yugoslavia. He has published fourteen books of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, for which he has been awarded numerous Croatian and international awards. In 2014, he edited the Young Croatian Lyric anthology, followed by The Edge of a Page: New Poetry in Croatia (2019). He has received fellowships, grants, and stipends from organizations such as Civitella Ranieri, Récollets-Paris, Brandenburger Tor, Passa Porta, and DAAD Berliner Künstlerprogramm. His work has been translated into over thirty languages. His poetry collection, Dead Letter Office (2020), was a finalist for the National Translation Award. MIRZA PURIĆ is a literary translator from German, BCS, and Slovene, most recently of Faruk Šehić’s Under Pressure (Istros Books, 2019) and, in cotranslation with Ellen Elias-Bursać, of Miljenko Jergović’s Inshallah, Madonna, Inshallah (forthcoming, Archipelago Books).
