Après le désagrégement de l’Union Européenne, dans un pays des Balkans renommé « Patrie populaire », tous les moyens sont bons pour façonner un endoctrinement sévère. Le parti nationaliste au pouvoir instaure un contrôle sectaire : les indésirables sont envoyés dans des camps de rééducation ou bien disparaissent sans laisser de traces, tandis qu’on dépose leurs enfants dans des Maisons du bonheur. C’est dans cette société hyper technologisée que revient John, ancien journaliste américain, que son ex-femme a appelé à l’aide. Il découvre que Maya, ancienne confrère qu’il aime toujours, a été punie pour ne pas avoir respecté la censure : on lui a enlevé sa fille. Maya vit, depuis, dans la soumission, avec un seul désir : récupérer sa fille en devenant une citoyenne exemplaire. John va devoir se rapprocher de la Résistance pour tenter de retrouver la fille de Maya (qui est aussi la sienne), n’hésitant pas à sympathiser dangereusement avec les déçus du régime.
