Brustkrebs ist weltweit eine der häufigsten und schwerwiegendsten bösartigen Erkrankungen. Trotz intensiver Bemühungen zur Krebsbekämpfung bleibt er die zweithäufigste Krebstodesursache bei Frauen. MCF-7-Zellen eignen sich gut für In-vitro-Brustkrebsstudien, da diese Zelllinie mehrere ideale Eigenschaften des Brustdrüsenepithels bewahrt hat. Die Hochdurchsatz- und High-Content-Analyse von kultivierten Zellen oder sogar kleinen Organismen ist von unmittelbarer Bedeutung für die Arzneimittelentwicklung, die Toxikologie und die individualisierte Medizin. In der Medizin ist die Identifizierung einer maßgeschneiderten, patientenspezifischen Therapie bei Krebs, chronischen Entzündungen, Infektionen und anderen Krankheiten wichtig. Der Wirkmechanismus von antiproliferativen Goldkomplexen war lange Zeit umstritten. Berichte, wonach Auranofin und andere Gold(I)-Komplexe das Enzym TrxR (Thioredoxin-Reduktase) wirksam hemmen, haben jedoch höchstwahrscheinlich die Frage nach dem biologischen Hauptziel von Goldkomplexen beantwortet.
