Der jüdische Kinderarzt Dr. Karl Leven (1895-1942) liess sich 1931 in seiner Heimatstadt Düren in eigener Praxis nieder. Schon 1933, kurz nach dem Boykott-Tag machte das Ehepaar Leven erste Erfahrungen mit der brutalen Gewalt der Nationalsozialisten. Die berufliche Entrechtung folgte: 1934 der Entzug der Kassenzulassung, 1938 das Berufsverbot. In der Progromnacht wurde die Praxiseinrichtung zerschlagen und verbrannt. Der Zwangsinternierung in Aachen folgte am 15. Juni 1942 die Deportation "nach dem Osten", die Todesspur, die nach Izbica und in das Vernichtungslager Sobibor führt. Seit 1995 hat sich der Autor, selbst Kinderarzt in Düren, der Lebenswelt seines Kollegen angenähert. Seine Recherchen belegen die Jahrhunderte alte Verwurzelung der Familie Leven in der rheinischen Region. Auch wird die Bedeutung jüdischer Kinderärzte für die Medizin in Deutschland vor 1933 beleuchtet, ebenso wie die bereitwillige Kooperation der nichtjüdischen Ärzteschaft mit dem Nationalsozialismus.
