Während sich die Plakatgestalter der ersten Generation noch an der westlichen Moderne orientierten und nach einer universalen, funktionalen Kommunikation suchten, knüpfte die folgende Generation ab den 1970er-Jahren immer bewusster an die eigene Bildtradition an und pflegten betont individuelle Ansätze. Dies geschah nicht zuletzt als Reaktion auf die Faszination des Westens für eine Plakatkultur mit ganz anderen Rahmenbedingungen und Argumenten. Bis heute funktioniert das japanische Plakat vor allem als hochästhetisches Indoor-Medium und Imagewerbung, die ein Selbstverständnis des Gestalters als Künstler voraussetzen.
