Die Kreuzzüge und die Auseinandersetzungen zwischen den Angelsachsen und den normannischen Eroberern bildet den historischen Hintergrund dieses 1820 von Walter Scott veröffentlichten Romans, seinem bis heute populärsten Werk: König Richard Löwenherz ist bei der Rückkehr aus dem Heiligen Land in Österreich in Gefangenschaft geraten. Seinem treuen Gefolgsmann Ivanhoe gelingt dagegen die Rückkehr in die Heimat, wo inzwischen Richards jüngerer Bruder mit Hilfe der Normannen die Macht an sich gerissen hat. Ivanhoe nimmt den Kampf gegen die normannischen Ritter, darunter den teuflischen Tempelherren De Bois-Guilbert, auf. In einem dramatischen Turnier stehen sich die beiden schließlich zum finalen Endkampf gegenüber.
