Den größten Teil seiner wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn verbrachte der Goethe- und Storm-Spezialist als Hochschullehrer in Leipzig; zu seinen Schülern gehörten u. a. die später bekannten Literaten Erich Kästner und Kurt Pinthus. Die vorliegende Band über Leben und Werk von Gottfried Keller geht auf sieben Vorlesungen zurück, die Köster in Hamburg gehalten und danach für die Buchausgabe überarbeitet hat.§Nachdruck der 1900 in Leipzig erschienenen Erstausgabe.
