THE GHETTO TAROT ist eine fotografisch-kunstlerische Interpretation der traditionellen Tarotkarten. Die Szenen wurden vom Rider-Waite-Tarot-Deck (ursprunglich 1919 von der Kunstlerin Pamela Colman Smith entworfen) inspiriert und zusammen mit einer Gruppe haitianischer Kunstler, den Atis Rezistans, in den Ghettos von Haiti gestaltet. Die tradierte Symbolik der Karten hat sich in zeitlose Chiffren verwandelt, mit denen das moderne Heute ebenso entschlusselt werden kann wie Ereignisse, die weit in eine andere Zeit zuruckreichen. Das Fotoprojekt von Alice Smeets ist keine Verherrlichung des Ghettos, sondern versucht das Leben im Ghetto in differenzierenden Lichtern zu zeigen, voller Kraft, Leben, Freude und Kreativitat. Ghetto Tarot will die Mauern von Vorurteilen und Unwissenheit wenigstens ein Stuck weit einreißen.
