Die vorliegende Arbeit bestätigt die Hypothese, daß im Althochdeutschen ein ehemaliges, im Indogermanischen funktionierendes, hochmotiviertes Genussystem relikthaft erhalten ist. Das bedeutet, daß im Althochdeutschen von jedem Substantiv potentiell alle drei Genera gebildet werden konnten. Die Überprüfung von Substantiven mit Mehrfachgenus an allen Belegstellen in der gesamten althochdeutschen Textüberlieferung, ausgehend von der semantischen Motiviertheit der Genuszuweisung (Maskulinum: Singulativum - Femininum: Kollektivum - Neutrum: Kontinuativum), erwies einen in Spuren noch lebendigen Zusammenhang von Genuswechsel und Bedeutungswechsel bei einem selben Substantiv. Gestützt wird der Befund durch den Sekundärwortschatz im Bereich der Derivation, wobei das Genus als Einteilungsprinzip für die Derivationsarten des Althochdeutschen geltend gemacht werden kann. Die beigefügte Material-CD dokumentiert rund 6700 Belegstellen von 271 untersuchten Lexemen.
