La notion de contact affectif, notamment, devait se révéler cruciale pour distinguer l'entité pathologique « autisme infantile précoce ».L'exposé minutieux de cette genèse germano-américaine éclaire un pan mal connu d’une histoire nosologique complexe ; il se veut également un texte de combat, à l’heure où, en France, l’autisme est l’objet d’affrontements politiques majeurs.Plus qu'un symptôme neuro- ou psychopathologique, le « phénomène autisme » est ici considéré comme symptôme d'une cassure civilisationnelle. Et dans cette perspective, bien différente de celle qu’ouvrent les thérapies cognitives, Marie-Claude Thomas montre à quel point le souci de la parole et du jeu en tant qu’activité de penser (Freud) est décisif dans toute visée thérapeutique.
