In diesem Band sind Texte zusammengeführt, die Stationen auf diesem Weg und zugleich Orientierungspunkte für die Kunsttheorie in ihrer Durchführung markieren.Am Anfang steht eine Abhandlung über Subjektivität und Kunst, welche die Grundzüge der Theorie entfaltet. Es folgen vier einflußreiche, aber zum Teil noch unveröffentlichte Abhandlungen, die im Anschluß an eine Auslegung der Systematik von Hegels Ästhetik die Grundzüge einer Diagnose der Lage der Kunst in der Moderne ausbilden. Der Band enthält zudem eine Reihe von Essays, unter anderem über Richard Wagner, über Samuel Beckett, über Ernst Gombrich und über einige besondere Aspekte der Grundlagen und der Gehalte einer Theorie der Kunst.
