Der ethische Entwurf Trutz Rendtorffs, der hier in einer Neuedition der 1990/91 erschienenen Fassung vorgelegt wird, kann bereits 30 Jahre nach ihrem Erscheinen als klassischer Text liberaler Theologie gelten. Von Anbeginn an möchte sein Entwurf einer ethischen Theologie mehr sein als eine theologisch reflektierte Anleitung zum guten Handeln. Mit der Ethik präsentiert Rendtorff ein Programm zur Selbstaufklärung der Theologie in der Gegenwart, die bei der ethischen Lebenswirklichkeit ihren Ausgangspunkt nimmt. In der Art, theologische Tradition auf die Gegenwart zu beziehen und für die eigene Lebensführung fruchtbar zu machen, stellt Rendtorffs Ethik nach wie vor einen wichtigen Beitrag zur theologischen Urteilsbildung in der Moderne dar unbeschadet der Tatsache, dass manche Konkretionen mittlerweile selbst historischen Charakter haben.
