"El matadero" es considerado el primer cuento argentino, y en él Echeverría usa este escenario de Buenos Aires para simbolizar el clima político del país entre 1829 y 1852 durante la dictadura de Juan Manuel de Rosas. La historia transcurre en los suburbios de esta urbe en un ambiente limítrofe entre la ciudad y el campo, entre la civilización y la barbarie. El relato presenta en su composición elementos típicos del enciclopedismo francés del siglo dieciocho -ironía, anticlericalismo, rebeldía- y anticipa las tendencias que marcarían en el futuro las creaciones literarias de estos territorios, como el realismo, el naturalismo, el modernismo o el criollismo.
