Fragt man Jugendliche, was sie in solchen Gruppen tun, bekommt man häufig Antworten wie 'nichts eigentlich' oder 'einfach nur Spaß haben'. In einer ethnographisch-gesprächsanalytisch angelegten Untersuchung beschreibt der Autor, was in solchen Gruppen tagtäglich gesprochen und getan wird und zeigt, wie Gruppenstrukturen (etwa interne Hierarchien und Normen, Abgrenzung gegen andere oder ein 'Wir'-Bewusstsein) durch solche Interaktions- und Kommunikationsprozesse aufgebaut und aufrechterhalten werden. Im Zentrum der Studie steht die Beschreibung peer-group-typischer kommunikativer Verfahren (etwa klatschen, lästern, necken, spotten, sich spielerisch beleidigen etc.) sowie die Bestimmung ihres funktionalen Beitrags für die Aufrechterhaltung der Gruppe.
