Adolf Wilbrandt (1837 - 1911), Schriftsteller und Direktor des Wiener Burgtheaters, schrieb zeitkritische Schlüsselromane aus dem Münchener Dichterkreis, historische Tragödien und Gedichte. Für sein dramatisches Werk wurde er 1877 mit einem von drei vom deutschen Kaiser Wilhelm I. gestifteten Schiller-Preisen ausgezeichnet.§Der vorliegende Roman handelt von den versponnenen, an Nietzsche erinnernden philosophischen Ideen des Protagonisten Dr. Helmut Adler von der Entwicklung des "Übergangswesens" Mensch zum "Vollmenschen" (Phönix), der auf der Osterinsel "herangezüchtet" werden soll. Seine Ideen werden jedoch an Sozialisten weitergegeben. Adler wehrt sich in einer öffentlichen Versammlung gegen die Vereinnahmung seiner Philosophie durch "sozialistische Gleichmacherei" und es kommt zu einem Eklat.§Nachdruck der Ausgabe von 1895.
