Über den Autor:

1811 als Sohn eines Stallmeisters in Berlin geboren, studiert Karl Ferdinand Gutzkow Theologie und Philosophie, u.a. bei Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Noch als Student gibt er eine eigene Zeitung heraus und beginnt damit eine streitbare Karriere als Journalist. Er gilt Zeitgenossen als provozierend und polemisierend, ist leicht reizbar und überwirft sich mit vielen Weggefährten. Als Schriftsteller ist er erfolgreich und gut bezahlt, dennoch stets in Geldnot. Psychische Krisen, Anfälle von Paranoia und Selbstmordversuche unterbrechen immer wieder seine Schaffenskraft. Am 16. Dezember 1878 stirbt in Frankfurt am Main mit Karl Gutzkow ein bedeutender Vertreter des deutschen Frührealismus schlafend bei einem Schwelbrand.
