"Im vorliegenden Band möchte ich einige allgemeine Züge hervorheben, die die Art und Weise charakterisieren, in der das sexuelle Verhalten vom klassischen griechischen Denken als Bereich moralischer Einschätzung und moralischer Optionen reflektiert worden ist. Ich gehe von dem seinerzeit gängigen Begriff des Gebrauchs der Lüste aus, um die Subjektivierungsweisen, auf die er sich bezieht, herauszuarbeiten. Indem ich jeweils von einer Praktik ausgehe, die in der griechischen Kultur ihre Existenz, ihren Status und ihre Regeln hatte (gesunde Lebensführung, Hauswesen, Liebeswerben), werde ich analysieren, wie das medizinische und philosophische Denken diesen Gebrauch der Lüste ausgearbeitet und einzelne Themen des Sittenstrenge formuliert hat, die auf vier großen Erfahrungsachsen wiederkehren sollten: Verhältnis zum Körper, Verhältnis zur Gattin, Verhältnis zu den Knaben und Verhältnis zur Wahrheit."
