Nel libro ci sono sonetti amorosi, omaggi alla tradizione poetica italiana (Dante, Foscolo, Leopardi), poesie oscene secondo il modello comico-realistico, scherzi, versi d'occasione e perfino un poema incentrato su un giocatore del Milan degli anni Ottanta (Mark Hateley). Un libro manieristico, dunque: sapendo però che il cimento con la lingua e le forme della tradizione attraversa gran parte dell'opera di Mari anche in prosa (si pensi a «Io venía pien d'angoscia a rimirarti»). Ed è proprio nel lavoro sulla lingua letteraria che Mari riesce a esprimere con maggior forza le vertigini dolorose o gioiose della propria interiorità. Dunque, «dalla cripta» dove giace la tradizione poetica italiana che oggi appare più desueta, Mari trae materiali che gli permettono di scendere nella cripta di se stesso e trarne deliziosi scheletri.
