Mais quand il s'agit des grandes questions comme le suicide, le temps, la mort, l'amour, la politique..., bien que restant familier, le ton prend de la hauteur, devient grave. Œuvre dans l'oeuvre, les lettres de Daumal témoignent de la rigueur de sa pensée, dévoilent ses doutes, ses espoirs, donnent de précieuses indications sur la genèse de ses poèmes. Le volume s'achève avec son départ pour New York. Une partie de sa vie est terminée. Il a vingt-quatre ans.
