Le Confessioni sono l’opera più celebre di sant’Agostino d’Ippona, scritta tra il 397 e il 400 d.C. Rappresentano il primo esempio di autobiografia spirituale nella storia della letteratura occidentale. Nel testo, Agostino racconta la sua giovinezza, il percorso di conversione al cristianesimo e la sua riflessione su Dio, il peccato, il tempo e la memoria. L’opera è divisa in 13 libri, in cui Agostino ha voluto porre davanti a Dio e a noi tutti il ricordo della sua anima e, con grande umiltà, rappresentare il suo vecchio e nuovo “io”. Il libro è all’origine della vocazione religiosa di Papa Leone XIV. Il Papa, nel giorno della sua elezione sul solco di Pietro, ha detto con grande fierezza: “Sono un figlio di Sant’Agostino”.
