Los protagonistas de su novela rehacen en una formidable prosa las exploraciones que en ese momento realizaban franceses, ingleses, italianos y alemanes en el continente africano: el mundo a vista de pájaro, subidos en un aeróstato propulsado por el gas que tan recientemente se había empezado a utilizar; la cambiante perspectiva desde una barquilla que salva obstáculos con una velocidad y un modo insospechados hasta aquel momento. A mundo nuevo, a visión nueva, nuevo género novelesco.
