Sheridan Le Fanu (1814-1873) fue un escritor irlandés, especialmente conocido por sus historias de fantasmas. Fue además uno de los pioneros del género de terror en la era victoriana y uno de sus exponentes más importantes. Carmilla fue una de las primeras historias de vampiros escritas en tiempos modernos y precursora de muchas obras de éxito, como es el caso de Drácula de Bram Stoker, quien se basó en muchas características del personaje creado por Sheridan Le Fanu para escribir su obra cumbre. Fue una de las primeras historias en romantizar el mito del vampiro y convertirlo en un relato cargado de erotismo, con imágenes sugerentes y planteando una relación diferente entre la víctima y el victimario, típica hoy en día de las historias de este género.
