Der Briefwechsel zwischen Friedrich Argelander und Alexander von Humboldt umfasst 41 der Fachwelt bisher unbekannte Briefe. Humboldt hat entgegen seiner Gewohnheit die von Argelander erhaltenen Briefe sorgfältig aufbewahrt, so dass die Herausgeber den Dialog zweier bedeutender Wissenschaftler des 19. Jahrhunderts rekonstruieren konnten. Viele der Argelander'schen Mitteilungen verarbeitete Humboldt im 3. Band seines Alterswerkes "Kosmos" . Der bedeutende Bonner Astronom vermittelte dem preußischen Gelehrten insbesondere neueste Erkenntnisse zum Thema veränderlicher Sterne. Darüber hinaus wurde auch das Schicksal der "Astronomischen Nachrichten" nach dem Tod des Herausgebers H. Ch. Schumacher thematisiert. Der Band wendet sich vor allem an Wissenschaftshistoriker mit dem speziellen Interessengebiet Geschichte der Astronomie. Viele der Briefe geben Einblicke in die Humboldt'sche Arbeitsweise beim Verfassen des "Kosmos", so dass der Band ein würdiger Beitrag zum Humboldt-Jahr 2019 ist.
