"L’avaro" è una commedia in cinque atti, rappresentata per la prima volta il 9 settembre 1886 al Palais-Royal con Molière nel ruolo di Harpagon e Armande Béjart in quello di Mariane, che si ispira all’Aulularia di Plauto. All’inizio non ebbe molto successo, forse per l’insolito uso della prosa in una commedia lunga o per il trionfo pressoché insuperabile dell’opera di Moliére "Il Tartuffo". In tutta la commedia l’ilarità è quasi amara, perché l’avarizia vince su tutti i sentimenti: sull’amore filiale, sull’amore paterno e sull’amore romantico. Divertenti sono i dialoghi in cui l’essere avaro è presentato come il sintomo di una malattia. Nonostante l’evoluzione dell’intrigo della pièce, il vizio non viene mai corretto e l’avarizia trionfa fino all’ultima pagina.
