Desde la emigración de Schoenberg a Estados Unidos, la correspondencia adquiere un profundo sentido la estética y la ciencia musicales, así como las ideas conceptuales y religiosas. La selección que recoge este libro fue realizada por Erwin Stein, quien como alumno y posteriormente amigo de Schoenberg, era un verdadero experto en sus ideas y propósitos.
