Antonio Parra Los esfuerzos de modernizar España mediante la ciencia y la técnica, entre otros, tuvieron gran impacto no solo en la sociedad hispana del siglo XVIII, sino también en sus colonias, lo que se tradujo en la creación de instituciones y expediciones científicas a diversas partes del mundo. Entre dichas instituciones se constituyeron gabinetes o museos, jardines botánicos, etc., que confrontaron la necesidad de incrementar sus colecciones por lo que las solicitaron a los viajeros y estudiosos de varias naciones, además de las traídas a la Península como fruto de dichas expediciones. La vida y obra del portugués Antonio Parra, asentado en La Habana se inserta dentro de este contexto o movimiento científico, y así, además de crear el primer gabinete de historia natural y libro sobre esta materia en la isla de Cuba, recolectó y envió numerosos ejemplares de plantas y animales a Madrid con el fin de que fueran exhibidos y aclimatados en España.
