Following up on the first book in the series, Analysis Alice and the Stripy Sweater, which focused on saving money for a goal, Lunch or Luxury focuses on learning the difference between wants and needs:

Everyone loves lunchtime. But when Alice's parents decide to stop packing her lunchbox for school, Alice suddenly has to spend $3 a day on food she doesn't particularly care for. And she knows exactly what she wants to spend it on. Stephanie just got a Luxury Friendship Bracelet from her dad, and all the girls decided to save up for matching bracelets and charms. If Alice saves up her lunch money, she can buy it even faster, and maybe even get a few extra cute charms! But why is it so hard to save when she's hungry?
