Nach Kriegsende wurden mit der Bundesrepublik und der DDR eine langfristig stabile demokratische sowie eine sozialistische Ordnung errichtet. Beide Gesellschaftssysteme galten lange als unvereinbar mit dem Adel. Während der mittel- und ostdeutsche Adel um 1945 aus der späteren DDR floh oder vertrieben wurde, bot ihm die Bundesrepublik eine neue Heimat. Diese Studie nimmt das Selbstverständnis sowie die soziokulturelle Praxis des sog. ostelbischen Adels in den Blick und zeigt, dass sich dieser, um auch weiterhin an einer Selbstdefinition als Adel festhalten zu können, auf seine ideellen Werte zurückzog und sich fortan als eine 'Gesinnungsgemeinschaft' verstand. So war es ihm möglich, in der Lebenswelt des privaten Alltags weiterhin als ein 'Alltagsadel' fortzubestehen.
