本書是作者長達五十多年的意拳學習和鍛煉過程中，記錄了幾十件有關意拳歷史發展過程中出現的重要的人物和歷史事件，利用自己也是意拳弟子的便利條件，親身採訪了很多歷史事件當事人，在此基礎上，作者通過查找原始檔案、報刊等重要的歷史文獻的基礎上，對意拳發展歷史上的重大歷史人物和歷史事件，以及相關傳說和秘聞，給出了學術考證和真假辨別。本書中還首次公佈了很多讓人驚爆眼球的重大江湖內幕和傳聞，本著言之有據的原則，給出作者客觀和公正的考察結論。
本書作者劉正，字京都靜源，其家族是明清時期的著名進士家族，日本國文學博士（1999），曾任武漢大學、中國人民大學和華東師範大學歷史學和中國古代文學教授。現為美國國際考古學暨歷史語言學學會法人代表和終身高級研究員、桂氏講座教授。迄今已經出版個人學術專著50部。作者自幼師從意拳祖師王薌齋先生門下之直系正宗弟子和衣缽傳人姜正坤和李見宇兩先生，現為意拳第三代直系正宗弟子和衣缽繼承人。
